Book Autopsies

If you're a lover of old books, look away Now!

Brian Dettmer is an American artist who alters existing media - such as magazines, cassette tapes and old books as seen below - to transform and create new works. The finished pieces can be quite sculptural in some cases, but always transformative and sometimes revelatory. Some of the works are almost autopsian - with the inner images revealed in layers, beautifully composed and brought into the daylight with Detmmer's scalpel.

“Old books, records, tapes, maps, and other media frequently fall into a realm that too much of today’s art occupies. Their intended role has decreased or deceased and they often exist simply as symbols of the ideas they represent rather than true conveyers of content. ... When an object's intended function is fleeting, the necessity for a new approach to its form and content arises.”

Burn brightly, Pete
