Burke's Backyard

James Lee Burke on Writing....

"Shakespeare said that all power lies in the world of dreams. John Milton, in a sonnet written on his blindness, described his sleep as being filled with light, but at dawn he was once again robbed of his sight and woke to darkness. My old professor John Neihardt, author of "Black Elk Speaks," used to say he wrote in the late hours because that was the time of day when the voices of dead poets spoke to him. It's no accident that each of these men saw his art emanating from a world that exists somewhere beyond the appearance of things."
