The Bottoms

In between marking papers and spending time with family and friends, I'm still trying to read Joe R Lansdale, the American cult writer. I made it to the movies today to see The Lincoln Lawyer with a buddy and we were talking about how we have both read and loved Lansdale's magnum opus The Bottoms - a mystery and coming of age novel, sort of like To Kill a Mockingbird meets Tom Sawyer meets James Crumley. An Edgar Award winner, its an excellent read and both of us have read it three times since it came out in 2000 - its one of those rare books you can reread easily with its folksy and bittersweet mystery set in depression America. Lansdale is an acquired taste and my buddy hates his Hap and Leonard redneck road series, (although he enjoys Crumley) and he loves this book. So if you haven't heard of The Bottoms, try searching it out - you won't be disappointed.

Burn brightly, Pete

  1. Well, hate may not be right. Loathe, detest maybe, not sure about hate. On second thoughts, no, you were right in the first place. Hate is good. Hate works. Good grief. Now I'm channeling Gordon Gekko!
