I've finally worked my way through Lansdale's Flaming London - as outrageous as ever - and am currently working my way very slowly through Karl Barth's first volume of the Dogmatics ( I won't bore you with it) and today I picked up Carol Matthau's "Among the Porcupines", her romantic autobiography about life with Walter. An amazing life story, Carol was a fostered child until her mother rescued her and she became the daughter of a millionaire, rubbing shoulders with the Vanderbilts, Karen Blixen and was best friends with Oona O'Neill (Charlie Chaplin's wife).
A childhood friend of Truman Capote, Carol was the inspiration for Holly Golightly that Capote modelled his story Breakfast at Tiffanys upon. She married the same man twice until she met and fell in love with actor Walter Matthau - living an extraordinary life through his gambling addiction, Oscar winning movies and his amazing and abiding love for her. A wonderful autobiography by a very talented woman who lived a charmed life mixing it with the rich and famous. Track it down in a second-hand store or on eBay if you can (it will have a better cover than the one above!).
Burn brightly, Pete.
