Here in Brisbane, Lifeline hosts its annual BookFest - usually twice a year at the Brisbane Convention Centre - an event that runs for several days and is billed as the largest 2nd hand Book Sale in the southern hemisphere. I was a National Director for Lifeline in the early 90s and spent time flying backwards and forwards across the country and on phone hook-ups offering what advice I could in the way of advertising and marketing, and BookFest is a very agreeable method of continuing my support for the organisation. The BookFest has been an enormous success for them over the years, although I have noticed numbers have dropped the last 2 years. This is possibly because of their marking policy, but there are still brilliant bargains to be had.
This year I picked up several missing volumes needed to complete my shelves from Lee Child, Reginald Hill and Val McDermid - all for under $6.00 each and some as low as $3.00, as well as some jewels such as Michael Freedland's biography of Jerome Kern and the Collected Works of Guy De Maupassant for $3.00. The sale finishes Tuesday for all Brisbane-ites and even though its been on for 3 days now, when I went in at 6.30 last night there were still bargains to be had, plenty of choice and wide open spaces making it easy to take your time and make wise and frugal choices.
