by Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg & Billy Rose.
I never feel a thing is real
When I'm away from you
Out of your embrace
The world's a temporary parking place
Mmm, mm, mm, mm
A bubble for a minute
Mmm, mm, mm, mm
You smile, the bubble has a rainbow in it
Say, its only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Yes, it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Without your love
It's a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade
It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me
Arlen & Harburg were the song writing team that produced the Song of the Century: Somewhere over the Rainbow - almost omitted from the movie due to studio influence. Arlen was one of the best loved songwriters of the 20th century composing hits like Get Happy, Stormy Weather, That Old Black Magic, One for My Baby (And One More for the Road) & Acc-ent-uate the Positive. Harburg was a lyricist who also wrote April in Paris, Brother Can You Spare a Dime? and the musical Finian's Rainbow. Billy Rose was a nightclub owner. Paper Moon was originally written for a failed musical called The Great Magoo, found its way into a movie in 1933 and became a major success during the war years.
