Some years ago I happened across the works of US assemblage artist Michael deMeng.
His works are based on transformation and I used his idea of altering and adding on to existing clothing as the basis for a Year 11 task with my students some years ago. Not a great success, but the girls loved the process. DeMeng currently has a new blog showing some of his latest work and what he's been doing in workshops. So currently, I'm toying with the idea of assemblage - clothing sculpture for Year 9s... but I'm not sure if it might be a little too sophisticated for a fourteen year old. Still, I'm paid to work out how to educate them and move them up/along in their appreciation and views. Maybe deMeng is the boy.
Burn brightly, Pete
