That Lucky Old Sun

(Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day)

Up in the mornin', out on a job,
Work like the devil for my pay.
But that lucky old sun got nothin' to do,
But roll around heaven all day.

Fuss with my woman, toil for my kids,
Work till I'm wrinkled and gray.
While that lucky old sun got nothin' to do,
But roll around heaven all day.

Good Lord up above, can't you hear me cryin'?
Tears all in my eyes.
Send in a cloud with your silvery linin',
Lift me to paradise.

Oh, show me that river, take me across,
wash all my troubles away.
Like that lucky old sun, gimme nothin' to do,
But roll around heaven all day.

Like that lucky old sun, gimme nothin' to do,
But roll around heaven all day.

(Part of the Things You Don't Know About Me series of posts)-
So this is the song I want sung at my funeral. Frankie Lane, Ray Charles, Paul Williams, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra - whoever sings it will be in good company. "That Lucky Old Sun" is a 1949 popular song with music by Beasley Smith and words by Haven Gillespie. It was songwriter Paul Williams' father's favourite song and his Life Goes On Album was where I first heard it. (Apologies to the folks who are sick of hearing about PW but I'm really enjoying going through his back catalog at present. I gave a copy of Life Goes On to an old girlfriend years ago and was reminded to play some of the songs from it recently and it still stands up. There's are reason why he picked up all those Grammys and Academy Awards)

Burn brightly, Pete
